CBR Bull Rider: Spud Jones

Parks sponsors champions

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – 2008 was a special year for bull riding because it not only provided some of the most exciting rodeo in years, it also introduced the Navajo Nation to a young, twenty-year-old bull rider who had no fears and everything to prove.

The rider was Spud Jones and the rodeo was the 62nd Annual Navajo Nation Fair Championship Bull Riding (CBR). Jones was unknown at the time, but he rode his way to a first place finish and surprised the Nation with his maturity and knack to tame the toughest of bulls.

That year Navajo Parks and Recreation – Special Events sponsored Jones and helped propel the young rider’s career to a national level.

Come September 9, the CBR is coming back to Window Rock for the 64th Annual Navajo Nation Fair, and Special Events is excepting nomination letters to sponsor three more riders.

The top three sponsored riders will be selected representatives from the rodeo associations of the All Indian Rodeo Cowboy Association (AIRCA), Central Navajo Rodeo Association (CNRA), Navajo Nation Rodeo Cowboy Association (NNRCA) and Double Iron Bull Riding Association (DIBRA).

Special Events requests a letter of interest from each nominee, as well as bio information, full color action photo and a headshot. The letter of interest should reflect the following values: cultural, goal, role model and family oriented.

Nomination letters will be accepted until August 3, and the chosen rider will be announced on August 13.

Entries into the Navajo Nation CBR Challenge will take place Sunday, August 22, 2010 from 6 – 8 pm. In order to enter, you must call the CBR Entry Office at 936-462-8099.

Although Parks is only sponsoring riders for the CBR, the Indian Rodeo and Junior Rodeo entries are currently open.

The Indian Rodeo, which will be from September 7 – 12, will include three slacks, a night performance on Friday and two afternoon performances on Saturday and Sunday. Following the performances, on Sunday, there will be a final four showdown that will occur approximately around 1 pm.

There is a limit on the number of entries and each event costs $150, with the exception of the $100 fee for each Ladies Team Roper. A one-time $25 will also be charged as an administration fee.

The Open Junior Rodeo will take place September 7 at 8 am, with five divisions available for entry and costs based on division.
