Skate park clarification

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. –On Wednesday, the Parks and Recreation Department announced that it would be taking part in the development of a new skate park in the White Cone Chapter, as well as contributing funds to the development of a skate park in the Fort Defiance area. While Parks and Recreation is contributing to the development of each park, the White Cone Chapter is the only location that is being funded exclusively by Parks.

The skate park in Fort Defiance is being developed by the Office of Youth Development – Fort Defiance Chapter, and is part of a major community development project that will consist of two new baseball fields, a softball field, a multi-purpose center and a culture garden. The skate park will be 83 feet by 156 feet and will contain several unique features, such as a shaded area for skaters to rest.

Discussions for the skate park in the Fort Defiance area started about ten years ago, but only within the past five years has it been initiated. The Office of Youth Development is a major driving force in the initiation of the project, as well as Council Delegate Harold Wauneka.

Parks and Recreation is assisting only to help fund the skate park’s equipment, which is a very small portion of the park’s total cost.
