ABOUT US

Window Rock Sports Center aims to promote and provide fitness programs, to educate the public on living a healthy lifestyle, to provide recreational activities; and provide rental facilities on a year round basis.

The Window Rock Sports Center, originally known as the Navajo Civic Center, was built in 1957 on the Navajo Nation Fair Grounds.  At the time, it was used as a community type hall for large gatherings such as dances, basketball games, concerts, movies, and other recreational activities.  In the early years, the facility was the only building in the community large enough to hold large meetings such as the Navajo Nation Council Sessions.

Today, the facility is used as a rental facility for large gatherings and meetings (i.e. political rallies, elections, school Christmas programs, revivals, pow-wows, song and dances, high school and mid-school basketball games and tournaments, concerts, dances and other special events during the Fourth of July Fair and Navajo Nation Fair).

Additionally, the building currently accommodates aerobic classes, weight room, cardio room, basketball court with seating bleachers, sauna room, men’s and women’s locker rooms/showers, stage, and kitchen/ concession stand.

The Navajo Nation Fair Office oversees and manages the Window Rock Sports Center and other facilities located on the Navajo Nation Fair Grounds.  The Navajo Nation Fair Office and the Window Rock Sports Center both fall under the direction of the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department, which was established

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

The Window Rock Sports Center (WRSC) is located in Window Rock, Arizona, which is the epicenter of the Navajo Nation government.  We are about 250 miles northeast of Phoenix, Arizona, 160 miles west of lbuquerque, New Mexico and about 26 miles Northwest of Gallup, New Mexico in Apache County.  The Navajo Reservation encompasses areas of Northeastern Arizona, Northwestern New Mexico, and Southeastern Utah.

Window Rock Sports Center is located on the Navajo Nation Fair Grounds.  The Fair Grounds is on the south side of Hwy 264 immediately west of Basha’s Grocery Store in Window Rock, Arizona.  On the east side of Sports Center, the Navajo Special Diabetes Program recently constructed a modular building that now houses the Window Rock Wellness Center.

For easier identification, the Sports Center is structured in a traditional Hogan shaped building.  The original architectural designs incorporated hand-carved sandstone blocks and 35 antique stain glass windows.  These still beautify the building today. Not part of the original designs, the building is currently painted royal blue and grey to match the other rental facilities on the Navajo Nation Fair Grounds.
